A scientific case study presented by Dr. David Gracy about two Nazi documents which was a cut out from a World War II pamphlet having a picture on one side and a script on the opposite side. Although the documents were supposedly printed in Germany, upon careful observation using a boom stand microscope the printed language is in Russian. At the bottom of each document Nazi seal and German language can be found.
More studies will be made on ink component and the process of synthetic aging used on the paper because the first examination on paper and ink confirm authenticity of any document to be doubtful. In performing fiber analysis it would be advised to use a boom stand microscope to reveal paper composition such as wood pulp, which was present in the period of World War II and both having no helpful sign of originality. The two examples upon initial research have no specific evidence, although one of which has no title, while the other has an inscription of “Passierschein AA 316”.
Upon further investigation with a boom stand microscope front in ambient light of the document it has been observed that the right edge has been cut into the picture and the other edges appear to be cut properly. Back in ambient light of the document, majority of the language is Russian and small type at the button is printed in German. Front and back of other document can be seen in the bottom right corner of the back of document a Numbered AA316 and the right side has been cut into picture and type.
With the aid of a boom stand microscope, it has been observed that the printing ink is black, very shiny, flaky and brittle. The ink does not adhere to the paper which can easily be removed when touched with a tungsten needle. This flaking is evident under a boom stand microscope.
There are a lot of ways how to make an artificial aged paper without using any machine just some materials that can be seen in our house hold. Like, by creating a mottled effect by using of coffee powder pigment, exposing to direct sunlight, and application of charcoal to produce a dusty and mold effect. These are only few ways on how to fake aged paper and how to look it old and worn. But when examined under ultraviolet light and with the aid of a boom stand microscope it will reveal a different structure which is different to the original one.
Using a boom stand microscope will show spots and grains, again when the paper was examined under ultra violet light it was discovered that artificial aging was used because it showed dark grains in the document and some indication of chemical brighteners used in modern paper. Viewed under a boom microscope the fiber indicates a modern made of chemical wood pulp and fillers. The fibers are not even in color due to artificial aging.
It is confirmed that the document was made through artificial aging because of the darkened surface on the paper and when touch by tungsten needle the fibers are destroyed and exposure of white layer fiber below the surface. The comparison of its appearance under boom stand microscope again revealed a modern paper was used in forging the document.
The importance of using a boom stand microscope revealed the minute details of a forged art of the smallest structure from fiber to color can be detected to reveal whether it is original or not. Here is a link to the article
